What Is myGov?
myGov is the Australian Government's centralised online portal that lets you access a wide range of government services from a single account. Instead of maintaining separate logins for Medicare, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Centrelink, and other agencies, you can link them all to one secure myGov account.
Why You Need a myGov Account
Most Australians will interact with at least several government services over their lifetime. A myGov account makes these interactions faster, more secure, and more convenient. Key services accessible through myGov include:
- Medicare – claim rebates, view your claims history, and update your details
- ATO (myTax) – lodge your tax return, check your super, and view income statements
- Centrelink – manage payments, report income, and apply for support
- My Health Record – view your health information and share it with providers
- National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – manage your NDIS plan
- Child Support – view and manage child support arrangements
- Veterans' Affairs – access DVA services and entitlements
How to Create a myGov Account
- Go to myGov.gov.au – Visit the official site and click "Create an account".
- Enter your email address – You'll receive a confirmation code to verify your email.
- Set a username and password – Choose something secure and memorable.
- Choose a sign-in option – You can use a secret question or sign-in code sent to your email or mobile.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) – Strongly recommended for security.
How to Link Government Services
Once your account is created, you can start linking individual services. Each service requires a different method of identity verification:
- Medicare: Use your Medicare card number, expiry date, and IRN (Individual Reference Number).
- ATO: Use details from a recent tax notice or bank account information held by the ATO.
- Centrelink: You may need to visit a Services Australia centre the first time to verify your identity in person.
Staying Secure on myGov
The Australian Government warns that myGov is a frequent target of phishing scams. Follow these tips to stay safe:
- Always type my.gov.au directly into your browser — never click links from emails or text messages claiming to be from myGov.
- Enable two-factor authentication on your account.
- Never share your myGov username or password with anyone, including government staff.
- Check your account regularly for any unfamiliar activity.
Getting Help
If you have trouble creating or accessing your account, you can call the myGov helpdesk at 13 23 07 (available Monday to Friday). Alternatively, visit your nearest Services Australia service centre for in-person assistance.
Once set up, your myGov account becomes one of the most useful tools you have for managing your relationship with the Australian Government — all in one place.
